A Memorable Trip to Barog: A Little Tranquil Hill Station Near Delhi

Our content-writing team at SOUTHALL TRAVEL had long been planning for a team outing, but we were not able to decide the destination. All were suggesting different choices and views. After a long debate, we all agreed on a place most of us were unaware of. BAROG!!! Barog?  Where is this place?? What is it famous for?? There were several questions none of us were unable to answer.

I rummaged on internet and found that Barog is a small hilly town on Chandigarh-Shimla highway. In Solan district of Himachal Pradesh, the town is nestled at an altitude of around 6000 ft above the sea level. It is no so popular; but offers a peaceful ambiance and abundant natural beauty.

Then I got to learn about the intriguing history about Barog. Actually, the town is named after Colonel Barog, a British engineer who planned to construct the world's largest straight tunnel on the Kalka-Shimla Railway Track. In a bid to speed up the work, he ordered to drill the mountain from both the sides. Unfortunately, his calculations went wrong and the ends of the tunnel didn't meet. British Government feel it an utter waste of time and money, and hence fined the colonel Barog. He was also terminated from his service. The embarrassment led the engineer (col Barog) commit suicide.

But later his efforts were considered, and the town where the tunnel is buil was named after Mr Barog. The amazing tunnel and the beautiful railway station in Barog now draws tourists from far and wide. Unhurried pace of life and splendid mountainous beauty the place offer make it an ideal escape from the city life.
No hotchpotch like Solan, no exorbitant hotel rates like Shimla, plus easy access from Chandigarh and Delhi make Barog an ideal weekend gateway. We spent a couple of nights in Barog and enjoyed many things; from trekking through the green hills and visiting the famous Barog tunnel to exploring some sightseeing attractions and savouring local foods. It was truly a mesmeric experience to say the least.

I will try to give you a sneak peek into the fascinating beauty of Barog through these pictures.

Trekking down the greenery-clad hills; our feet were making music on the fallen dried leaves

Morning views from the hotel room were just spectacular!!

A primary school in the town that is isolated on hill slopes far from the nearest road. The kids have to walk long to reach here, on hill terrain that can exhaust even experienced walkers.

The pleasures of the wild... we met a beautiful stretch of wild flowers while trekking down to the Brog Station

This is not just any rail track, It's listed in the UNESCO's WORLD HERITAGE SITES. The famous Kalka-Shimla toy train runs on this narrow-gauge track.

The famous Barog Tunnel. Surrounded by lush green hills, this place offers fascinating views.
The tunnel is the largest on Kalka-Shimla railway route.
