Mumbai Bio: How A small dingy Island becomes A thriving Metropolis

The commercial capital and the gateway to India for the western world, Mumbai is one of the most vibrant cities on the earth. Originally an archipelago inhabited by fishermen and such other folks, the city is today home to the biggest corporate houses, billionaires and the most recognized celebrities of the world. Mumbai thrives on contrasts, and has been a dream destination for many. The city incurred its name by its original habitants, who used to call it Mumbai after their patron goddess Mumba Devi. Before coming into hands of Portuguese in early 16th century, Mumbai was ruled by a Hindu King Bhim Dev and then by the Sultans of Gujarat. Portuguese called it Bom Bahia – the beautiful bay – which later became Bombay.

In 1661, Portuguese gifted the city to British as part of dowry, when Princess Catherine of Braganza espoused Charles II of Britain. Underestimating the city’s potentials, Prince Charles gave it on lease to East India Company at a ludicrous rate of 10 pounds annual. You may call it the serendipity of Mumbai or the bravery efforts of Geral Aungier, the then president of East India Company, the city is today a premium industrial metropolis and one of the busiest ports in the world. The first railway line in India was elongated between Mumbai and Thane in 1854. Later on, coastal steamer services were set up to make the province progressing more. In 1862, all seven islands of Mumbai were merged, and transformed into a single landmass. Today, every facility a human may possibly think of is available in Mumbai and it’s called the ‘Queen of Indian cities’.

Mumbai today is vibrant, vital, alert and energetic. A city that never sleeps; a cosmopolitan flavor coupled with age-old charms and a territory teaming with people of all faiths, religions, races and regions is what describes the essence of Mumbai. It has grown into a cosmopolitan city, the entertainment center and a hub of trade, commerce, arts and cultures in India. Mumbai is home to the Atomic Power Station: a dream result of scientific talents’ efforts, and the biggest manufacturing centers of pharmaceutical, petrochemicals, textiles, fertilizers and films. You would be surprised to know that the biggest number of films in the world is produced in Mumbai every year. Considering all this, it’s rightly said, “If Mumbai sneezes India is like to catch a cold.’”

Mumbai is a premium tourist destination and invites travelers of all nature. Hotels in Mumbai are globally recognized for their ultra-modern amenities and loveable hospitality.
